Let Week 6 Begin!

Baby is now the size of a sweetpea.
Growing like crazy, baby is starting to sprout eyes, ears, nose, cheeks and chin. Those little hands and feet -- still webbed like paddles -- might wiggle by week's end, the heart is beating (almost twice as fast as yours) and blood is starting to circulate.

Right on track?

I had my appointment with my oncologist on Tuesday. When I told him I was expecting he looked just as shocked as I did when I saw those 2 little pink lines. He didn't seem too worried, especially looking up the half life of the chemos that I had. The chemos were well out of my system before I conceived. He said that the levels of chemo i was given should not have affected my eggs either. Which is what he told me before we started chemo as well. He went ahead and ran my HCG levels and it was 9024.4! I was thinking it would be much lower since I thought I wasn't quite that far along. But it looks like per those levels I am right around the 5 week 6 day mark!! He asked me to call OB to go ahead and make u/s appointment so that he could get a better idea on the gestational age. He wants to make sure I am really not farther along than we think. So I called OB they were going to get me in this morning but Nick really wants to be there so I postponed it until 8:30 Thursday February 4th. I will be almost 7 weeks by that point and we should be able to see a heartbeat by that point. We will still have the Dr appt for Feb 17th. Right in time to tell Mom & Pop G since they will be in that weekend!!!! :O)

Only a week until we get to see our baby boo!!!

Already Nesting!

Being pregnant, I am starting to feel the urge to clean, organize, and decorate every square inch of my house. Inside and out. Hubby is already on board too! I think he just wants me to do as much of it as I can while I still "feel good"! Aka No excuses!! As I tackle this over the next few months, I will blog about it and post before and after pictures. Right now, our house looks like we just moved in. Which we kinda just did. Things are shoved in closets and hidden all over the townhouse. But I am ready to get things going. I want this house to look like a home before our little babypoohbear arrives. Plus, without me working this will keep me busy and will hopefully result in a magical casa transformation.

Breathing is for the birds.

The main pregnancy symptom I am dealing with is sneezing, stuff nose, that has a tendency to run :(

Some women find that they have sinus problems during early pregnancy, sometimes even before they have missed a period. This is because the hormone changes in your body brought about by pregnancy affect mucus production in your nose and sinuses.---GRREEAAAT!

This is not fun. And it has been around for a few days now. UGH. Please please go away.

Easing my mind.

Things have set in a bit and of course I have now googled pregnancy after cancer treatments. This is a little something to ease my mind.

Timeframe for Getting Pregnant
Most oncologists recommend waiting 2 to 5 years after cancer treatments finish before trying to achieve pregnancy. The majority of cancers recur during this time, so they want to make sure that you are healthy before allowing you to try to get pregnant. However, everyone’s medical situations are different—some survivors have to wait longer and others are approved for pregnancy much earlier.

For women, it is usually recommended that you wait a minimum of 6 months after treatment. This is because your eggs may be genetically damaged from their exposure to chemotherapy and radiation while they were in the process of maturing. The time required for those eggs to leave your body is approximately 6 months.

Miscarriage Risks
An increased risk of miscarriage after cancer is only a concern for a small percent of patients who had radiation to their pelvic area or some fertility sparing gynecologic surgeries.

Current research does not suggest a higher rate of miscarriage after exposure to chemotherapy or radiation to other parts of the body.

The rate of birth defects in children born to cancer survivors (who have been exposed to chemotherapy and radiation) is the same as the general public, 2% to 3%. There has not been a lot of research done on the subject, but what has been done is very reassuring.

Nick and I are both very cautious about this pregnancy. It was just 2 months ago I finished chemo and radiation. I have already made appointments with my Oncologist to discuss the possible problems this may cause. I have also made an OB/GYN appointment for February 17th.

Until then we will be praying for a healthy baby.

And so it begins.

Many of you who will be reading this later on, have no idea as I write this now.

On January 20, 2010 we got the surprise of our life. I got a positive pregnancy test. When I showed it to Nick he was pretty ecstatic! Of course I had the "Maybe it's old" mentality. So off to the store we went and I proceeded to get another positive result. Looks like our little family of 3 will be growing!! We are expecting our first 2 legged child, Diesel will be so jealous!!!!

According to my calculation I am due Sept 25th!

Dear Baby G,

I feel like I have waited for this day all my life. The day I discover that I am pregnant with you. Those two lines are the absolute most wonderful thing I have ever seen. I can't wait to tell your grandparents about you, our friends, find out if you are a boy or girl, pick out your bedding, pick out your NAME, feel you move inside of me, bring you into this world, and hold you in my arms. I even willingly accept morning sickness just as a beautiful reminder that you are there growing inside of me. And even though you are just the size of a seed right now, you are already SO loved. I will be the greatest mommy in the world for you Baby G. I have dreamed of you for a long time and I know you will be absolutely perfect. You will be my baby; handcrafted by God just for me. So stick with us baby, we have a whole life to live together. You just snuggle in and get comfy and grow, grow, grow! I'll do the rest. I love you sweet baby and I cannot wait to meet you.

Love, Your Mommy
